A beautiful glimpse into EMS and the heartbreaking moments, and ghosts, we carry.

There’s a little more to my job…

A man returns from a foreign holiday and is feeling very ill. He goes to see his doctor, and is immediately rushed to the hospital to undergo tests. The man wakes up after the tests in a private room at the hospital, and the phone by his bed rings.

"This is your doctor. We’ve had the results back from your tests and we’ve found you have an extremely nasty STD called G.A.S.H. It’s a combination of Gonorrhea, AIDS, Syphilis, and Herpes!"

"Oh my gosh," cried the man. "What are you going to do, doctor?”

"Well we’re going to put you on a diet of pizzas, pancakes, and pita bread."

"Will that cure me?" asked the man.

The doctor replied, “Well no, but… it’s the only food we can slide under the door.”

From Not On My Ambulance on Facebook!

My partner and I are out eating dinner tonight and we get to talking. I found out about a year ago that he had a son he lost a while back, but I never asked questions and it never came up.

As we picked at our bread bowls my partner shared his son’s story. His vulnerability and honesty moved me, so I pass this along.

Today is the the eighth year anniversary of when his son died of a brain tumor.

His son was thirteen years old.

We sat there in Panera bread, both of us crying as he told me about what his son was like. Good at math and science, played baseball, loved his PS2. We talked about the good days and the bad days.

He told me he left EMS when his son got sick, and it took him four years to come back.

Medicine is more than fixing your patients. Sometimes in the EMS world you just have to listen.

I’m honored to call my crew my family. Please let yourself give a little love on your next shift, you have no idea who might need it.

Where'd you find that pic of EMS in the front loader?
